From Old Norse skera (to cut), from Proto-Germanic *skeraną (to shear), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ker- (to cut). Cognate with Faroese and Icelandic skera, Swedish skära, Danish skære, Old English scieran, English shear, and Dutch and German scheren.
