Etymology

edit

Cognate with Latvian spaļi (waste of flax or hemp), Old Prussian spelanxtis (splinter); outside of Baltic, perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *(s)pelH- (to split, tear off). If so, then compare Ancient Greek σπολᾰ́ς (spolás, leather garment), Latin spolium (skin, hide; spoils), Old Church Slavonic поль (polĭ, sex; half),[1] Proto-Germanic *spelþą (destruction, ruin), Sanskrit फल् (phal, to burst; to bear fruit).
