Inherited from Vulgar Latin *expanticāre (to burst) (compare Aromanian spãntic, spãnticari, Venetian spantegar (to bust; scatter, sprinkle), Calabrian spantecare (to open), Abruzzese spandecà (annoy, bother, torture), from Latin pantices (bowels), plural of pantex; cf. pântece.
