From s- + Vulgar Latin *tremiō, from Latin tremēscō (I begin to tremble, shake), in turn from tremō (I shake, tremble) + -ēscō, from Proto-Indo-European *trem- (tremble). Compare Spanish and Portuguese estremecer.
