From s- + Vulgar Latin *tremiō, from Latin tremēscō (“I begin to tremble, shake”), in turn from tremō (“I shake, tremble”) + -ēscō, from Proto-Indo-European *trem- (“tremble”). Compare Spanish and Portuguese estremecer.
