From Old Norse sveinn, from Proto-Germanic *swaina-, *swainaz (relative, young man, servant), from Proto-Indo-European *swé (oneself; aside, separate, apart), thus properly one's own.

Other reflexes of PG *swainaz include Old English swān (modern English swain), Old High German swein.
