Etymology 1 edit

From a Vulgar Latin root *templa, which is probably derived from a root *tempula, from Latin tempora, plural of tempus, or alternatively from the feminine of templum through confusion with tempus, meaning the temple of the head. Compare Italian tempia, Old French temple.

From Latin templum, possibly through a Byzantine Greek intermediary τέμπλον (témplon). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *t(e)mp-lo-s, from *temp-. Doublet of templu. Compare Aromanian templu.
