tavu
Estonian edit
Noun edit
tavu
Finnish edit
Etymology edit
tavata (“to spell”) + -u. Coined by Finnish physician and philologist Elias Lönnrot in 1835; the earlier form was tavuu (with -uu). The computing sense is from the 20th century, perhaps because multiple bytes make up a 'word'.
