editSino-Vietnamese word from 石, clipping of thạch hoa thái (石花菜) (“Gelidium amansii”), a species of red algae used to make agar. Rau câu (“Gracilaria”), a term designated another genus of red algae and agar source, came to be used in the Southern dialects, while Central dialects use đông sương.
