Usage notes
edit- All non-ngang and non-huyền tones are considered trắc tones, which is a terminology derived from and equivalent to Middle Chinese 仄聲 (“oblique tones”), which involved changing contour pitches. In Sino-Vietnamese morphemes, the sắc and hỏi tones were placed on Middle Chinese syllables that began with a 清聲母/清声母 (qīng shēngmǔ, “voiceless obstruent onset”), and the nặng and ngã tones were placed on syllables that began with a 濁聲母/浊声母 (zhuó shēngmǔ, “voiced obstruent or sonorant onset”).
