From Sanskrit त्रि (trí), त्रीणि n (trī́ṇi), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *tráyas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *tráyas, from Proto-Indo-European *tréyes. Cognates include Hindi तीन (tīn).
