Etymology edit

From vád (charge, accusation) +‎ -at (accusative suffix) +‎ emel (to lift, raise). Compare German Anklage (charge) and erheben (to raise), together to bring charges.

  1. (law, idiomatic) to press charges (against someone: ellen), bring a charge or an accusation, indict, arraign, impeach someone (to formally accuse a person of a crime)
    Nem kívánok vádat emelni.I don't want to press charges.
    Nem emelek vádat ellenük.I'm not pressing charges against them.
