Alternative forms

  • wääre (Moselle Franconian, but in limited use)

Etymology

edit

From Middle High German werden, from Old High German werdan.

Pronunciation

edit

Verb

edit

wääde (third-person singular present wird or weed, past tense wurd or wood, past participle wurde or jewurde or jewoode)

  1. (Ripuarian) to become
  2. (Ripuarian) to be; used with past participles to form the passive voice
  3. (Ripuarian) will; shall; used with infinitives to form the future tense (which is rather rare, however)

Usage notes

edit
  • The forms weed, wood, jewoode are Kölsch. The forms with -r- are used in virtually all other dialects; they may sometimes be spelt wiëd, wued, (je)wuede, indicating the regular vocalization of pre-dental -r-.
