From Proto-Germanic *wīnatrewą. Cognate with Old Norse víntré, Gothic 𐍅𐌴𐌹𐌽𐌰𐍄𐍂𐌹𐌿 (weinatriu). Equivalent to wīn (wine) +‎ trēow (tree).
