Etymology 1

edit

The origin is unknown. A root ج ي ب (j-y-b) lacks otherwise except obvious derivations of this noun. Possibly from the root ج ب ب (j-b-b) whence also the known جُبَّة (jubba) garment. Also suggested to be from Aramaic, Classical Syriac ܓܰܝܒ݁ܳܐ (gaybā, temple, vaulted chamber) with peculiar semantic evolution or from unattested meanings, or Aramaic 𐡢𐡡𐡠 (gbʾ) / גַּבָּא / ܓܰܒܴ݁ܐ (gabbā, side, flank), if from this then doublet of جَنْب (janb), and جَوْف (jawf, cavity) is also compared.[1]
