From Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰayH- (to perceive). Cognate with Avestan 𐬛𐬌𐬜𐬁𐬌𐬙𐬌 (diδāiti, to see), Old Persian 𐎮𐎮𐎹 (di-di-y /⁠dīdiy⁠/, see, 2nd pers sg imperative), Persian دیدن (didan, to see).
