Check here for information on the flags currently in use. To add, remove, or change a flag, edit the list here and an interface administrator will eventually run a script to update the CSS.

Kung, etc edit

I suspect this page needs to be updated to account for the renames of !Xóõ to ǃXóõ and !Kung to ǃKung (and ǃOǃKung and ǃXũ, and possibly a few others). - -sche (discuss) 03:53, 11 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

I've now fixed ǃXóõ (and moved it to its new position: whereas an exclamation-point comes first in alphabetical order, this click thing comes well after Z). I don't see the others here, though. —RuakhTALK 17:06, 11 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
OK, thanks! - -sche (discuss) 22:54, 11 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Walloon edit

I could have sworn that there was a flag for Walloon in this gadget before. Can it still be added? --Æ&Œ (talk) 23:53, 5 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Some flags missing edit

The Piedmontese flag & the Sardinian flag are not displaying (for me) any more. Additionally: a flag for Normandie may be used, one for Campidanese Sardinian, one for Emilian, a historic one for Friulian, one for Louisiana Creole French, or also one for Megleno‐Romanian.

Here is the Sardinian flag: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Flag_of_the_Italian_region_Sardinia.svg

And here is a Piedmontese flag: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bandiera_della_regione_Piemonte.svg

However, the Piedmontese flag we have is not consistent with the one in the Wikipedia article about Piedmont. The one from the article looks like crap, though. I dun know any good flags for the other languages (yet). --Æ&Œ (talk) 12:37, 8 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

BP discussion edit

The following discussion has been moved from the page Wiktionary:Beer_parlour_archive/2011/January#New_gadget.

This discussion is no longer live and is left here as an archive. Please do not modify this conversation, but feel free to discuss its conclusions.

As some people asked for it, I have added a new gadget which adds country flags next to the language headers on entries, similar to how it's done on other wiktionaries such as Lithuanian Wiktionary. It is mainly meant for those people who think the current headers are too boring and/or do not stand out enough in the page. I realize that there are still many flags missing, hopefully I'll manage to add all of them. -- Prince Kassad 22:48, 20 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Rather than fear of being boring in style, I sometimes think that people who look at Swedish sections might want a way to get in touch with the Swedish-speaking users of Wiktionary, i.e. a link to Wiktionary:About Swedish or something like that. But such anonymous newcomers have of course not installed any special gadgets. --LA2 22:50, 21 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
"All of them" meaning that, for example, the "English" header will have, next to it, the flags for the US, the UK, South Africa, India, Austl., NZ, a whole bunch of Caribbean countries, several African ones, and a few Middle Eastern ones?—msh210 (talk) 08:17, 23 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
That was an issue raised on IRC, namely that the flag chosen is completely arbitrary. Obviously, we can't have all flags (it would cause vertical scrolling which is bad), we must decide on one. -- Prince Kassad 15:09, 23 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
Flag Law, as proposed by yours truly: 1. Flags will be displayed in the order (left to right) of the number of speakers of the language residing in the country. 2. Only the flags of countries which represent >= 10% of the global speakers of the language will be displayed; the maximum limit on the number of flags being the lesser of ten or the number which cause wrapping or scrolling on an 800px width resolution. 3. Flags will be displayed to the left and right (or only right) of the language name, a maximum of one flag to the left of the name and the remainder to the right. 4. You do not talk about Flag Law. - [The]DaveRoss 16:15, 23 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
Can we have a Roman eagle for Latin? SemperBlotto 16:20, 23 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

MediaWiki:Gadget-WiktCountryFlags.css. —RuakhTALK 19:18, 23 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
I definitely like it and I'll be using it, but I do think the flags are rather big. I think they should be shrunk down to at most two thirds of the current size. There are also quite a few languages that are missing flags still, but I take it those are going to be added later? Perhaps for translingual sections a picture of Earth can be added. —CodeCat 16:34, 23 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
Hmm, I used the same size that's used at Lithuanian Wiktionary (45 pixels width), and it seems to work fine for me, but maybe not for everyone. And yes, the missing flags will be added soon. -- Prince Kassad 17:16, 23 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
More options:   multiple flags can be displayed as shown here, or all flags can line up on the right side. They could all line up on the left side but I think we would all agree that is silly. - [The]DaveRoss 19:59, 23 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
Some sites make a single flag composed of the UK and US flags together. There is a diagonal divide from top right to bottom left, and the US flag is on the top left half and the UK flag bottom right. Maybe that would work for us too? —CodeCat 20:20, 23 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
I have seen that before on Wikipedia. Now if I could remember where it is... -- Prince Kassad 10:05, 24 January 2011 (UTC) (addendum: gotcha!  )Reply
People are going to bitch for choosing the flag of communist Yugoslavia for Serbo-Croatian... --Vahag 23:37, 23 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
What would be the 'best' choice for Serbo-Croation? Also, it is currently and opt-in gadget and person css will override gadget css so if someone wanted to replace a certain flag (or all of them) they can also do that. - [The]DaveRoss 23:49, 23 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
I don't know. I like the communist flag with the red star. --Vahag 23:56, 23 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
There was a heated discussion over the icon choice for Perapera-kun, my favourite Mozilla Firefox plug-in for Chinese (also Japanese) pop-up dictionary. Some American users refused to use the Communist red flag as the icon (one guy's argument was he worked for teh government and for him it was an issue if someone sees a red flag on his desktop) and chose an icon with a Chinese character instead, which I find very strange. Perhaps we don't need any icons? --Anatoli 00:57, 24 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
I'm decidedly not a fan of using a single country's flag to represent a language, as (a) it's insulting to those in other countries who speak the language and (b) may imply something about the dialect of the word in the entry. As the script is now, we should IMO never make this default, and I frankly don't like having it even as an option. If we use TDR's ideas, above, or others, for representing multiple countries, I wouldn't be (so) against it (though I wouldn't enable it, myself).—msh210 (talk) 07:33, 24 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
I basically agree with Msh210. Unlike flags, languages are not country-specific; even currencies aren't. We will be giving the wrong impression. Equinox 09:49, 24 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
I more or less agree. (See also <http://www.useit.com/alertbox/flagproblem.html>, BTW.) I'm O.K. with it as an opt-in thing, though, since there are apparently users who want it. (The blend of U.S. and U.K. flags seems disrespectful to both, though!) —RuakhTALK 12:49, 24 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
Since the flags don't link to their file: pages, I assume they can't be GFDL/CC-BY licensed (which need to link to the authorship info AFAIK (IANAL)), so we'd need to use only PD files. Right?—msh210 (talk) 07:35, 24 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
Can images of national flags be copyrighted in the first place? --Yair rand (talk) 07:44, 24 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
The SVG certainly can. I suppose if the server is sending PNGs that wouldn't be a problem in many cases, but File:Flag of Sicily.svg and File:Flag of Sicily (revised).svg show copyrightable variation. However, I think virtually all flags are PD, just for this reason.--Prosfilaes 04:54, 25 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
Templates don't link to the Template page, either (except for the edit window, which however is not immediately obvious). You could, for the same reason, remove all the templates on Wiktionary. -- Prince Kassad 08:45, 24 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
Arguing that something isn't true because we don't like the consequences is not a valid argument. We are pushing the lines by not linking to the template pages, but templates were made for and by Wikimedians who understand how templates are used so it's less of a big deal. And you can reach templates through the edit page; I see no way besides figuring out what a filename must be from a long URL hidden in a CSS file. Images were sometimes made by non-Wikimedians for non-Wikimedians and deliberately released under the CC-BY license (instead of having it pushed on them, like template writers). They may not appreciate as free an interpretation of the license.--Prosfilaes 04:54, 25 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
A better example might be our MediaWiki:Common.css and MediaWiki:Common.js, which are used for every single page. It is absolutely impossible to find these out if you don't know them. -- Prince Kassad 20:02, 28 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Flags for languages spoken in multiple countries edit

American Sign Language is a language of Canada, too.—msh210 (talk) 08:39, 10 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Many other languages have only one flag despite being used in several countries. I’m saving the most controversial choices for BP discussion, but if you know a better flag (or if you think no flag is better than the USA flag), feel free to fix it. — Ungoliant (Falai) 13:55, 10 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
I think no flag is better than the USA flag. Likewise, I think no flag is better for Spanish than the Spanish flag, etc. See my comment of 7:33, 24 January 2011, at [[Wiktionary:Beer parlour archive/2011/January#New gadget]] and the two comments directly below it that agree with it.—msh210 (talk) 20:41, 13 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
You disagreement with the flags used goes beyond my recent edits then. I won’t mind if you contest and remove any I’ve added, as long as you provide good reasons for each removal, but changing the way flags are chosen will probably require BP discussion. — Ungoliant (Falai) 22:57, 13 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
I'll hold off on protesting until someone proposes that the flags be visible by default.—msh210 (talk) 13:15, 14 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

FWIW, Español probably ought to have la bandera de la Hispanidad, and ASL would be better with a photo of someone's hands doing one of the motions (with a visual-only language, I think it's appropriate to replace the flag). --Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 16:16, 14 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

[edit conflict] Excellent idea for Spanish: this matches what was done for English (after discussion among several editors (on IRC IIRC)). I've effected it. Re sign languages, [1] is interesting.—msh210 (talk) 20:20, 14 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
@MK: that depends on whether the goal is to have the most accurate flag, or the most recognisable flag. If people saw the flag of Spain standing for a language, they'd probably correctly guess the language was "Spanish"; it they saw the Flag of the Hispanic People(s), they might not even recognise the flag. (Or perhaps I'm falling into the faux pas of w:WP:IDONTKNOWIT.) Compare the common use of the American or British flag, and the German flag, on the internet, to signify all English and all German, respectively. - -sche (discuss) 20:18, 14 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Exactly my thoughts. I use flags because they are an extremely useful visual aid when reading entries, not to accurately represent the language. Using a lesser known flag when a more known one is a valid choice is counterproductive, in my opinion. I must admit that I knew the Hispanic people flag, but that’s because I was into vexillology before I became a Wiktionarian. — Ungoliant (Falai) 20:25, 14 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Vatican flag for Latin? edit

Of course the only sovereign organ where Latin has currently official status is the Holy See (Vatican City), but it does not seem convenient to use its flag as gadget for the Latin entries. It isn't absolutely a national language and is not spoken other than in ceremonial occasions. It may be deductible that most users do not consider Latin a "language of Vatican", but rather a classical language used for studies for the sake of its cultural wealth and valour. I think using no flags or a flag of the Roman Empire seems more reasonable. - Eduardo Sellan III (talk) 09:44, 14 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Yes, strongly oppose for the same reason as Ungoliant. And the flag used for Spanish should also be changed to the Spanish flag. The other major Wiktionaries which I've seen use flags, use the Spanish flag and not the flag of some NGO(?) most Spanish speakers and most non-Spanish speakers like have never heard of. - -sche (discuss) 03:11, 8 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
I've switched Spanish to use the recognizable flag, matching what we do for Portuguese and French and indeed most other languages, e.g. I was reminded of this page by the addition of a historical flag for Provinz Schlesien (and not some linguistic club) as the Silesian German flag. - -sche (discuss) 03:11, 31 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

Portuguese edit

Portuguese is currently represented by the Flag or Portugal only. This is not incorrect, but ignores Brazil, a country equally influential on the language (both modernly and historically) and home to twenty times more Portuguese speakers than Portugal itself. That said, I suggest the current flag icon to be replaced by this diagonally divided Brazil-Portugal flag, just like we use an American-British flag to represent English properly including the nations which most contributed to build it. - Alumnum (talk) 22:24, 30 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

@AryamanA, Lo Ximiendo, Wyang, Erutuon, Suzukaze-c, do you have any objections to this suggestion? — Ungoliant (falai) 10:52, 5 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Why not just use CPLP's flag? Brazil and Portugal aren't the only Portuguese speaking countries either and it's frankly demeaning to suggest they are the nations that contributed the most to build the language. - Sarilho1 (talk) 20:32, 10 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
Because the CPLP's flag is little known, and we do the same with English and Spanish. Not long ago a flag representing "Spanish heritage" was used for Spanish, but since it was very unfamiliar, it was later decided to replace it by the current, more familiar Spain-Mexico flag. - Munmula (talk) 19:36, 13 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

A lot of choices here are silly, and what is considered silly or non-silly varies from person to person (I, for one, consider NOT using the flag of Spain for Spanish silly, although the flag of Mexico would be tolerable, and I don’t have to worry about the PRC government arresting me for looking at the Tibetan flag). This is why a while back I decided to move all CSS rulesets to my custom CSS, where I can add and change as many flags as I want according to my own criteria. — Ungoliant (falai) 15:19, 24 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

I see that a flag of Karnataka has been added here for Kannada (File:Flag of Karnataka.svg). Firstly this flag is an imaginary flag, wholly created by the Commons uploader themself. For these reasons I think the flag for Karnataka should be removed from here [probably better to include the flag of India for Kannada (see the discussion above for Telugu)]. Gotitbro (talk) 13:33, 14 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Could Franche-Comté's flag be added to the gadget for Franc-Comtois (roa-fcm)? --Lo Ximiendo (talk) 04:30, 22 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Lo Ximiendo: Sorry, I didn't figure out how to get the 45-pixel thumbnail. — Eru·tuon 03:43, 3 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
Never mind. I figured it out using [[File:Flag_of_Franche-Comt%C3%A9.svg|45px]]. — Eru·tuon 03:54, 3 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Erutuon: You left the flag at sixty-eight pixels. --Lo Ximiendo (talk) 04:45, 3 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Lo Ximiendo: Weird, so [[File:Flag_of_Franche-Comt%C3%A9.svg|45px]] displays the 68-pixel image. Fixed. — Eru·tuon 17:21, 3 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Okinawan edit

Could File:Flag of Okinawa Prefecture.svg be used for Okinawan ? -- 11:45, 30 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Yonaguni edit

Could File:Flag of Yonaguni, Okinawa.svg be used for Yonaguni? -- 10:02, 2 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Livonian, Votic edit

The following two flags should be added:

Thank you in advance. — surjection?08:19, 27 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Also, Serbo-Croatian and Welsh are both 404; although the files themselves still exist, the thumbnails don't seem to anymore. — surjection?17:16, 27 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Editable list of flags edit

This CSS file will now be generated from the list of languages and flags at Wiktionary:Language flags list. The list is in the format <language_name>: <image_name> (remove File: or Image: from the name of the image), optionally with a suffix of a space and <some number>px if the image needs to be displayed in a different size from the default (45px). It is sorted alphabetically, but with "Translingual" and "English" first, the same order that is used in entries. Regular users can edit the list, and then an interface administrator can look over the changes and regenerate the CSS using a Python script written by User:Surjection. This simplifies the process of adding new flags. — Eru·tuon 21:16, 30 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Rohingya edit

Here's a flag for the Rohingya tongue: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rohingya_flag.png

Also, the headword line templates for the tongue ought to display at least the Hanifi script. --Apisite (talk) 03:17, 28 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

@AryamanA, Atitarev, Erutuon Never mind, I got the message about the streamlined process.
I've updated the CSS so that it reflects your addition to the flag list. — Eru·tuon 01:17, 29 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
Still, the message about creating infrastructure for the Rohingya tongue stands.--Apisite (talk) 01:05, 29 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
@‎Justinrleung Would you like to see the new addition to the new list? --Apisite (talk) 01:10, 29 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Apisite: I made MOD:Rohg-translit for Hanifi Rohingya script, but I don't think the inverse (Latin to Rohingya) is possible currently given the lack of a standardised transcription in our entry names in Latin script. (At least, I can't make sense of it.) —AryamanA (मुझसे बात करेंयोगदान) 02:48, 29 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
@AryamanA: At least there's Omniglot (and anyone in the online community who speaks and types Rohingya well) for consultation. --Apisite (talk) 02:54, 29 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Apisite: Er, is that actually the preferred Latin transliteration? It's nothing like other Indo-Aryan languages... We'll probably be hard-pressed to find Rohingya editors I think, already an uphill battle with e.g. Hindi. —AryamanA (मुझसे बात करेंयोगदान) 03:09, 29 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
@AryamanA: That's why I'm trying my luck with RLA's personnel on Twitter. --Apisite (talk) 03:17, 29 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
@AryamanA: Actually, make that Twitter's Rohingya community. --Apisite (talk) 03:21, 29 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Apisite: Umm just saw your tweets. I'm not at all comfortable with your political views (judging by your Twitter), nor do I want them associated with my real-world identity. Consider this a civil farewell. —AryamanA (मुझसे बात करेंयोगदान) 04:09, 29 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
@AryamanA: Why would I look down on you or anyone else? (Besides, I have read the editorial treatise How the Specter of Communism Is Ruling Our World online.) --Apisite (talk) 04:34, 29 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Maguindanao edit

@Atitarev, Erutuon, ‎Justinrleung A flag for Maguindanao has been added. --Apisite (talk) 04:29, 7 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

I've updated the CSS. — Eru·tuon 04:37, 7 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Erutuon: Don't forget the request for Iranun. --Apisite (talk) 05:17, 7 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Erutuon: Thanks, too. --Apisite (talk) 05:18, 7 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Malayalam edit

@Apisite: The flag you have added for Malayalam is an absolutely fictitious one (taken from here; which has a lot of other dubious ones as well). Neither used historically, unofficially or anywhere else apart from that website.

It should be removed or replaced with the Indian flag. See Kannada section above. Thanks. Gotitbro (talk) 03:49, 22 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Jeju, Nigerian Pidgin, & Yoruba edit

@Erutuon, @Atitarev: I've added the flags for Jeju & Nigerian Pidgin. I wanted to add a Yorùbá-related flag, but I felt that the only way to do so properly would be to have a combo Nigeria-Benin flag, rather than only doing a Nigerian flag. However, I'm unfortunately not that well-versed with Photoshop-related tools, so I haven't been able to make it on my own. Thank you! AG202 (talk) 04:52, 12 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

@AG202: Added Jeju and Nigerian Pidgin! — Eru·tuon 05:08, 12 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thank you! AG202 (talk) 05:23, 12 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Munmula: You can edit Wiktionary:Language flags to add the missing information. — Eru·tuon 17:19, 12 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
To make it easier, there's now a list of flags without a description below the table on that page. The format is the image name, a colon and space, and the description of the image. — Eru·tuon 17:27, 12 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Sidamo edit

The flag for the Sidamo language could be as follows: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Flag_of_Sidama.svg --Apisite (talk) 21:23, 10 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Anon edit warring edit

Please block the anon 185.53.199.164 as they once again seem to be making bad edits to the flag language list page. A range block is probably necessary because it looks like one person has most likely edited with the same sort of crap from at least 2 different IP addresses. Protecting the page from non-autoconfirmed users or something similar might not hurt either. Pinging @Atitarev and @Chuck Entz, hoping one of you, if not another admin, will see this soon. Acolyte of Ice (talk) 11:13, 4 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Yola edit

@Mahagaja, @Leasnam: The flag of Wexford for the Yola language could be as follows: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Flag_of_Yola.svg. Please add it to css, thank you!--Zff19930930 15:00, 11 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

I've run the script and that flag is now in the CSS. — Eru·tuon 05:16, 10 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Kven flag edit

Hi - could someone please add the Kven flag for the Kven language? Here is a link to an image of the flag: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Flag_of_the_Kven_people.svg Supevan (talk) 17:34, 2 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

I've run the script to update the CSS and that flag is there now. — Eru·tuon 05:14, 10 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Bengali and Assamese edit

For Bengali, replace the flag of Bangladesh with File:Bengali language.svg. For Assamese, add File:Flag of India.svg. Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribs) 08:01, 9 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Sbb1413: I've added these ones to Wiktionary:Language flags list (which you can do) and updated the CSS (which only an interface administrator can do). — Eru·tuon 05:10, 10 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Old Galician-Portuguese edit

Since "Old Portuguese" has been changed to the more accurate name "Old Galician-Portuguese", the flag should be updated as well (i.e. moved from "Old Portuguese" to "Old Galician-Portuguese"). I tried changing it but it doesn't seem to have any effect. - Munmula (talk) 14:26, 9 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Munmula: Right. This is explained on the page: "Users can edit this list, but the CSS file can only be updated by an interface administrator using a Python script." — Eru·tuon 04:51, 10 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
I've run the script, so the language name is correct now. — Eru·tuon 05:11, 10 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! - Munmula (talk) 14:23, 10 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Historical flag vs regional (provincial) flag edit

Acehnese using historical flag of Aceh Sultanate. Balinese using flag of Province of Bali. Is there any policy about regional language especially language used in particular province or city? ―Rex AurōrumDisputātiō 09:30, 7 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

I don't think there is really any policy for which flags to use here. — SURJECTION / T / C / L / 11:38, 7 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Okay. ―Rex AurōrumDisputātiō 17:11, 7 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Masurian edit

Could the Masurian language have either File:Flag of Masurians (with COA).svg or File:Flag of Masurians.svg added to the list?

Should either one of the flags be added? Thanks for reading. -- Apisite (talk) 20:24, 5 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Chadian & Hassaniya Arabic edit

Please add the Chadian flag for the Chadian Arabic language: https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Flag_of_Chad.svg and the Mauritanian flag for the Hassaniya Arabic language: https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Flag_of_Mauritania.svg Protegmatic (talk) 15:42, 25 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
