From æt- +‎ bēon. From Proto-Germanic *beuną (to be), related to būan (to dwell), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰewH-, *bʰuH-. The past tense forms are from Proto-Germanic *wesaną (from which also wesan), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂wes-.
