Etymology edit

Inherited from Latin illum, accusative masculine singular of ille. Was originally l in earlier Romanian, with an initial prothetic î- added for ease of pronunciation.

Usage notes edit

Before auxiliary verbs beginning with a vowel (all forms of avea), îl must turn to l-. In colloquial language or poetry, this can happen before any verb beginning with a vowel.
