Borrowed from Ukrainian гли́пати (hlýpaty),[1] from Proto-Slavic *glip- (“to take a look”), of uncertain ultimate origin, either from Proto-Indo-European *gʰlip- or a substrate word of that form, in either case related to Proto-West Germanic *glippōn (“to slip, flee”).[2]
