Cognate with Old Saxon āno (“without”), Old Frisian ōni (“without”), Old Norse án, ón (“without”), Ancient Greek ἄνευ (áneu, “without”), Gothic 𐌹𐌽𐌿 (inu, “without”). The Gothic word stems from Proto-Germanic *inō, the other cognates from *ēnō.
