Κωνσταντινούπολη
Greek
editEtymology
editInherited from Koine Greek Κωνσταντινούπολις (Kōnstantinoúpolis) with suffix -ις (-is) > -η (-i), equivalent to Κωνσταντίνου (Konstantínou, “Constantine's”) + πόλη (póli, “city”).
Pronunciation
editProper noun
editΚωνσταντινούπολη • (Konstantinoúpoli) f
- Istanbul, Constantinople (the largest city and province of Turkey; former capital of the Byzantine Empire)
Usage notes
editUnlike in nearly all other languages, Greek speakers still usually call the city Κωνσταντινούπολη (Konstantinoúpoli), or colloquially η Πόλη (i Póli). Ιστάμπουλ (Istámpoul) is much less common.
