Inherited from Byzantine Greek ἀδειάζω (adeiázō), formed from Ancient Greek ἄδει(α) f (ádei(a), no fear; abundance) + -άζω (-ázo).

  1. (transitive) to empty (to make empty; to void; to remove the contents of)
    Άδειασαν τα ποτήρια τους.
    Ádeiasan ta potíria tous.
    They emptied their glasses.
  2. (transitive) to empty, to clear out, to pour out, to decant, to unload (:contents)
    Αδειάστε το περιεχόμενο στην κατσαρόλα
    Adeiáste to periechómeno stin katsaróla
    Empty the contents into the pan.
  3. (intransitive) to be empty
    Το σχολείο αδειάζει το καλοκαίρι· τα παιδιά πάνε διακοπές.
    To scholeío adeiázei to kalokaíri; ta paidiá páne diakopés.
    The school is empty in the summer; the children are on vacation.
  4. (colloquial) to be available
    Έλα να με βοηθήσεις. — Δεν αδειάζω, έχω πολλή δουλειά.
    Éla na me voïthíseis. — Den adeiázo, écho pollí douleiá.
    Come and help me. — I am not free, I have too much work.
  5. (military) to unload (a weapon)
