From βουτώ (voutó) +‎ -άω (-áo), from Byzantine Greek βουτῶ (boutô), from a metaplasm of () with the past stem βουτισ- (boutis-) of βουτίζω (boutízō), from Ancient Greek βυθίζω (buthízō, to sink, submerge).[1]
