Inherited from Byzantine Greek ποντικός, from the Ancient Greek Ποντικός μῦς (Pontikós mûs, a kind of weasel), that is a μῦς (mûs, mouse) from Pontus (Ποντικός (Pontikós, Pontic). Also see the Mediaeval diminutives ποντίκιν (pontíkin), ποντίκιον (pontíkion), Modern Greek ποντίκι (pontíki).[1]
