Inherited from Byzantine Greek ποντίκιν (pontíkin), ποντίκιον (pontíkion), diminutives of ποντικός (pontikós), from the Ancient Greek Ποντικός μῦς (Pontikós mûs, a kind of weasel), that is a μῦς (mûs, mouse) from Pontus; Ποντικός (Pontikós, Pontic). The computing term is a semantic loan from English mouse.
