The formation is similar to δωρεά (dōreá) and γενεά (geneá). The basis of this word may be related to Old Armenian ստեղն (stełn, “stem, shaft, stalk”) and English stalk, both from Proto-Indo-European *stel- (“stalk, trunk”).
