From Proto-Indo-European *stel- (“stalk, trunk”). Cognates include Ancient Greek στέλεχος (stélekhos, “stump, stub”), στήλη (stḗlē, “stela, pillar”), Latin stolo (“shoot, scion”), Old High German stollo, Old Norse stjǫlr (“rump”), Latvian stulms (“bootleg”), Russian столб (stolb), столп (stolp) and English stalk.
