From Ancient Greek ῠ̔ποδύομαι (get under; put on a character -as of actors' masks-), active of ῠ̔ποδύω (hupodúō) or ῠ̔ποδύνω (hupodúnō, put under). Morphologically, from υπο- (under) + δύομαι of active δύω (dýo, set, go down).
