From Ancient Greek ὕπνος (húpnos, “sleep”), from Proto-Indo-European *swépnos, from the root *swep- (“to sleep”).
Cognates include Mariupol Greek и́пно (ípno), English sweven, Sanskrit स्वप्न (svápna), Spanish sueño, Italian sonno and Latvian sapnis.
