Etymology edit

First attested in 1876 (The Well-Meant Speeches by M. Saltykov-Shchedrin). From dialectal засилить (zasilitʹ, to noose (a bird); to tie to) +‎ -ье (-ʹje), from за- (za-) +‎ си́лить (sílitʹ, to net; to force), from си́ла (síla). Compare with Belarusian засі́лле (zasíllje), Ukrainian заси́лля (zasýllja).
