Borrowed from Greek κομμάτι (kommáti, “piece”), from Ancient Greek κομμάτιον (kommátion) - a diminutive of κόμμα (kómma, “piece”), which also gives English comma. Cognates include Serbo-Croatian комад, Slovene komad and Aromanian cumatã.
