Inherited from Old East Slavic паꙗти (pajati, to forge). Probably related to пои́ть (poítʹ) (from Proto-Slavic *pojiti) and thereby to Ukrainian пая́ти (pajáty), Old Church Slavonic съпоити (sŭpoiti, to connect, to solder), Serbo-Croatian спо̀јити (to join, to solder) (1sg. спо̏jӣм), Slovene spojíti (to join, to solder) (1sg. spojím), Czech pojit (to join) (also spojit), Polish spoić (to join).
