From Proto-Slavic *plьvati, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ptyēw- ‎(to spit, vomit). Akin to Ancient Greek πτύω ‎(ptúō), Latin spuō, Old English spīwan (whence modern English spew), Old Armenian թուք ‎(tʿukʿ), Sanskrit ष्ठीवति ‎(ṣṭhīvati).
