From Proto-Indo-European *(s)ptyēw- (to spit, vomit); cognate with Ancient Greek πτύω (ptúō, spit out), Latin spuō, Proto-Germanic *spīwaną (whence English spew), Albanian shpif, Russian плевать (plevátʹ), Persian تف(tuf), Sanskrit ष्ठीवति (ṣṭhīvati).
