промозглый

Russian edit

Etymology edit

From про- (pro-) +‎ мо́зглый (mózglyj, rotten; damp (of weather)), from мзга (mzga, rot, mold, damp weather), from Proto-Slavic *mъzga.

Cognate with Ancient Greek μύδος (múdos, dampness, rot), Old Irish mosach (unclean), Low German mussig (dirty), Latvian mudas (rotten algae).

Pronunciation edit

Adjective edit

промо́зглый (promózglyj) (comparative (по)промо́зглее or (по)промо́зглей)

  1. piercingly cold and damp

Usage notes edit

Short forms are sometimes avoided due to their similarity to past-tense forms of промо́згнуть (promózgnutʹ, to get wet and spoil) (especially the feminine and neuter singular промо́згла, промо́згло).
