From Old Church Slavonic стонати (stonati), from Proto-Slavic *stenàti. Compare Bulgarian стон (ston), Czech stonati. Non-Slavic cognates include Ancient Greek στόνος (stónos, a sighing or groaning), Latin tonō (to thunder, to resound) and Sanskrit स्तनति (stanati, to roar, to cry).
