MongolianEdit

PronunciationEdit

(Ulaanbaatar) IPA(key): /ʊtʲərtəx/, [ˈɵtʲɪrtɵχ]

EtymologyEdit

From *udurid-, equivalent to Proto-Mongolic *udu- (to follow) +‎ -рь (-rʹ) (“sequence”) +‎ -дах (-dah) (“to guide a sequence (retinue), to manage”). Compare Kalmyk удр татх (udr tatx, to lead, literally to pull a sequence), Ordos ᠤᠳᠤᠷᠢᠳᠬᠤ (uduridqu, to take the initiative in doing something).

As for *udu- itself, it is likely a borrowing from Proto-Turkic *ūð- (to follow), compare Turkish uymak.

VerbEdit

удирдах (udirdah) (Mongolian spelling ᠤᠳᠤᠷᠢᠳᠬᠤ (uduridqu))

  1. to manage, to control
  2. to lead, to guide
