Unclear. Compare Proto-Slavic *pyrь (“cinder, incense; lye”), reflected in dialectal пирива́ (pirivá, “poor-quality soil”), or loanword фира́ (firá, “lees, sludge, residue”) (borrowed from Greek φύρα (fýra, “waste”)).
