хаал
Yakut
editEtymology
editFrom Proto-Turkic *kiāl-, compare Turkish kalmak.
Verb
editхаал • (qaal)
- (intransitive) to stay, to remain
- (after the -ан form of a verb) to do something consistently or continuously, to keep or end up doing something
Usage notes
editThe second sense is found elsewhere in the world. Compare "he stay working" (and the similar expression "he steady working") in Black English, as well as the development of the progressive aspect in the Romance languages (ultimately from Latin stō (“I stand, I stay”)).
