Inherited from Old Ruthenian хвати́ти (xvatíti), from Old East Slavic хватити (xvatiti), from Proto-Slavic *xvatiti. Cognate with Belarusian хваці́ць (xvacícʹ), Russian хвати́ть (xvatítʹ), Macedonian фати (fati), Polish chwacić.
