Old Armenian edit

Etymology edit

An Iranian borrowing։ compare Manichaean Middle Persian 𐫅𐫏𐫁 (dyb /dēb/), Parthian 𐫅𐫏𐫁 (dyb /dēb/, fortune, luck).[1] Perhaps ultimately from Proto-Iranian *diHp- (to shine, light up); see Cheung and Sanskrit दीप् (dīp, to blaze, to glow) for more on the root.[2]
