Etymology

The origin is uncertain. Ačaṙean compares with շարշափիւն (šaršapʻiwn), թարթափիմ (tʻartʻapʻim), գարգափ (gargapʻ), սարսափ (sarsapʻ), կարկափեմ (karkapʻem). According to J̌ahukyan, a sound-symbolic formation.

Note also Mingrelian ხორხაფი (xorxapi, to rub against something).

  1. (intransitive) to feel or grope about to find a thing or one's way, like a blind man
    • 5th century, Bible, Job 5.14:[1]
      Ի տուէ պատահեսցէ նոցա խաւար, եւ ի միջաւրէի իբրեւ ի գիշերի խարխափեսցեն։
      I tuē patahescʻē nocʻa xawar, ew i miǰawrēi ibrew i gišeri xarxapʻescʻen.

        Darkness will meet them in the daytime; and they will grope at noonday as in night.
  2. (intransitive, of leaves) to tremble, to shake, to rustle
