Etymology

The origin is uncertain. Perhaps related to խորթ (xortʻ). Or derived from Proto-Indo-European *gʰordʰo- and cognate with Proto-Slavic *gordъ, Proto-Germanic *gardaz; the basic meaning of Armenian would then be ‘(enclosed) pasture-land, pen, etc.’
