From Proto-Indo-European *gʰórdʰos, from *gʰerdʰ- (to enclose, encircle). Cognate with Proto-Balto-Slavic *gardas (enclosure), Albanian gardh (hedge, fence), Sanskrit गृह (gṛhá, house).[1]
