Etymology

The original spelling is աւգն (awgn), from Parthian *abi-gūna-, ultimately from the preverb Proto-Iranian *Habí- with the root *gaw- (to increase), whence Avestan 𐬔𐬏𐬥𐬀𐬊𐬙𐬌 (gūnaoti, to increase). Related to օգուտ (ōgut).
