From Middle Persian 𐭠𐭫𐭠𐭮𐭲𐭭𐭩 (ʾlʾstny /ārāstan/), prefixed form of Proto-Iranian *Hraz-, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₃reǵ- (to straighten). Cognate with other Persian verbs پیراستن (pirâstan, to embellish) and افراختن (afrâxtan, to hoist), and distantly to Sanskrit राजति (rājati, to direct), Latin regō (to rule; to steer).
