أفاويه
Arabic
editAlternative forms
edit- أَفْوَاه (ʔafwāh)
Etymology
editBorrowed from Ge'ez አፈው (ʾäfäw, “scent, fragrance”), pl. አፈዋት (ʾäfäwat), if not from Old South Arabian. But also with parallels in Cushitic. The singular فُوه (fūh) is back-formed and possibly invented by medieval dictionary authors to place the word under a “root”. Doublet of فَوْعَة (fawʕa), فَوْح (fawḥ), فَوْخ (fawḵ).
