From Middle Persian ʾstwhʾt' (astwihād), from Avestan 𐬀𐬯𐬙𐬋.𐬬𐬌𐬜𐬁𐬙𐬎 (astō.viδātu, who breaks a bone), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₃ésth₁ (bone) (more at استخوان) and Proto-Indo-European *weh₁y- (twist).
