First attested in c. 1419 as Middle Hindi بھاپھہ (bhāph) and later as بھاپ (bhāp),[1] inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀩𑀧𑁆𑀨 (bappha), from Sanskrit वाष्प (vāṣpa, tear).[2]
