From Middle Persian hwptk (xuftag), from Proto-Iranian *huptáh, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *suptás (asleep), from Proto-Indo-European *sup-tó-s, from *swep- (to sleep). Cognate with Pashto ويده (widë, asleep), Vedic सुप्त (suptá).
